In this surprising story of reclaimed justice, Wayne separates himself from the herd as Steve Pickett -- the only cowpunch at the Diamond R who's not buffaloed by a band of rustlers robbing widow Helena Rawlins (Shirley Grey). Her husband Jim was a hero to the gentle folk of Stampede, Arizona but five years ago he disappeared. Reports of his death soon spread like wildfire, and Helena resigned herself to mourning. But her neighbors were not so easily resigned to the lawlessness of Rawlin's hated rival Utah Becker (Wheeler Oakman), When Tim McCoy blows into town as Texas Grant, everyone agrees he's the spitin' image of Jim Rawlins -- and he's quickly wrangled into filing the dead rancher's boots. To keep her land and restore order to Stampede, Helena goes along with the ruse as Tex teams up with loyal Pickett to run the outlaws out of town, And after Tex is wounded in the showdown, she's rewarded with his delirious revelation: he really is her missing husband home at last with the woman he loves.
