Directed by critically acclaimed filmmaker Stephen Frears. Dangerous Liaisons, nominated for seven Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and winner of three, is an opulent minuet of "nasty, decadent fun" (Newsweek). The story comes from the frequently banned 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Two centuries later, writer Christopher Hampton transformed it into an international stage success, then fashioned the play into an Oscar@-winning movie script that sweeps viewers along on a brash, unpredictable torrent of sexual ploys and counter-ploys.

The luxurious settings are 18th century. But the film's characters could step into the 20th century without missing a beat. Leading an exquisite cast are Glenn Close in her Oscar-nominated portrayal of Merteuil, the rich, scheming widow; John Malkovich as Valmont, the predatory rake: and Michelle Pleiffer in her Oscar -nominated portrayal of Madame de Tourvel, whose beauty and virtue doom Valmont to violate his personal credo: don't fall in love.

"Don't give me any more pictures where the people write with feathers," studio mogul Jack Warner once decreed. Good thing that edict has fallen by the wayside. The feathers here are dipped in poison. And held by two of the most fascinatingly devious players ever to take the field in the age-old battle of the sexes.
