Glorifying the American liberation of the Philippines, BACK TO BATAAN begins in 1942, when a superior Japanese war machine invades the Islands. Despite a heroic stand, Bataan falls: Corregidor surrenders, and the outnumbered MacArthur prudently retreats to Australia -leaving Colonel Joseph Madden (John Wayne) and his outfit stranded in the jungle. Organizing an underground resistance movement, the American soldiers are joined by loyal Filipino troops and fugitive citizens, including a pretty American schoolteacher (Belulah Bondi) and her pupils.

Madden pulls off several daring skirmishes, including a raid on the infamous March of Death. He's aided in his efforts by Captain Andres Bonifacio (Anthony Ouinn) of the Philippine Scouts, a grandson of the leader of the Katipunan, a secret society from Filipino revolutionary days.

With the help of a secret agent, they hold down the fort, harassing the Japanese occupation forces until General MacArthur's triumphant return!
